Clarification of Business Names.
I’ve kept your original story and reasoning, but expanded it slightly to improve the flow, professionalism and clarity. I’ve also kept it personal, so it sounds like you explaining your business decisions rather than a formal corporate announcement.
Clarification of Business Names
Many people would know that I operate under two business names: SGH Business Services and SGH Security Services.
After watching a few business forums recently, I noticed some discussion around whether operating under two business names could create confusion, particularly for a small business. I thought it would be worthwhile explaining why I have chosen to maintain both names and how they fit into my business.
Where it all started
In 1993, when I first started working as a contractor in the security industry, my work was focused entirely on security services. It made sense at the time to register SGH Security Services, as the name reflected the work I was undertaking. This business name served its purpose for many years.
In 2012, I decided to expand my services beyond the security industry. I wanted to provide additional services to business owners, and I felt that a broader business name would better reflect the direction I wanted to take. As a result, SGH Business Services was registered, allowing me to expand into business consulting, mentoring, training and development, and other areas of business support.
Where things stand today
In 2026, SGH Business Services is the primary name under which I operate and invoice for my services. My security licensing arrangements also now operate under this business name, following changes associated with the new legislation that came into effect in 2026.
However, I have made the decision to retain SGH Security Services as a registered business name.
There are practical reasons for this. The annual cost of maintaining the registration is relatively small, and the name still has potential value when it comes to search engine optimisation (SEO), targeted marketing and helping people find security-related services online.
Having a business name that specifically identifies security services can be useful when someone is searching for security advice, risk assessments or related support. It allows me to maintain that connection with the security industry while continuing to develop SGH Business Services as my primary business brand.
As technology continues to evolve, particularly in the way people search for businesses and services online, I may review this arrangement in the future. For now, I believe there is still value in retaining both names.
So, why two business names?
The short answer is that each name reflects a different stage in the development of my business and serves a different marketing purpose.
SGH Business Services represents the broader range of business support, mentoring, consulting and training services I provide. SGH Security Services maintains a clear connection to my security industry background and the security-related services I offer.
I understand that having two business names might raise questions, particularly when people come across them separately online. That is why I believe it is important to be open and transparent about the arrangement.
Both business names belong to me, and I am upfront about that. The intention is not to confuse anyone, but to ensure the names remain relevant to the services I provide and the people I want to reach.
Ultimately, my focus remains the same: providing practical advice, support and education to help businesses and their owners move forward with confidence.
